Tasting 3 Australian Wines: which Cabernet Sauvignon will be my pick? In the Philippines, we’re fortunate to be able to get a wide selection of affordable wines from Australia — rightfully so, since it’s the nearest wine region to us, everything else is twice as far across the world! What a treat it is to get quality wines from Australia at competitive priced points. As one of the more dependable New World wine regions, Australia has made a name for itself in coming up with wines that are aggressive in taste and presentation. With Australia’s unique topography, situated far south off the equator, the country is home to extremely warm temperatures. Southeastern Australia is however tempered with a coastal climate that has given its land and people the right elements in making great quality wine that can rival the best across the world. Among these, one of my favorite wines from the region is Cabernet Sauvignon — the most widely grown grape in the world! In this video, I’m trying out Australian Cabernet Sauvignon at 3 different price points: one at P300, the next at just below P400, and the last at under P600. I know the differences between these price points may be too small in the broader perspective. But as the context of this video is primarily made from the viewpoint of the Philippine audience, the difference in prices (unfortunately) already do matter 😅. In any case, I believe this can still be somewhat relatable to viewers from the rest of the world. I’ll be trying to distinguish nuances of these wines despite the miniscule differences in pricing and taste. I really wanted to have this tasting challenge with wines that are of the same varietal coming from the same region: Southeastern Australia. With this video, I hope to be able to help anyone watching in their decision-making when choosing between wines — wines that share a lot of similarities but from different growers in the same region! I hope this becomes a helpful guide for you future use.

The first wine that I’m featuring is from Wolf Blass. Wolf Blass has an extensive line-up of wines at every price point. For this video, I’m featuring one from their entry-level Eaglehawk line. Priced at P319, I found that his does not have a strong depth of flavors. It has a strong whiff of alcohol and not very jammy, which is typical to Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. On taste, it has some mineral flavors without the tartness that I’m accustomed to with this variety. This wasn’t great but this wasn’t too bad anyway.

The second wine is from Lindeman’s, another one of Australia’s big wine producers. For this video, I’m featuring a Cabernet Sauvignon from their Bin 45 range. This is as famously featured by Master Sommelier Patrick Capiello for Playboy.com. This wine is more typical of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, jammy on the nose and also in taste. It’s however more on the light side when compared to the usual Cab. This wine shows some depth with light mushroom on the nose. On flavor, there’s a strong recollection for cheese. At P380, this is a great value buy! Technically, they sell this at S&R Membership Shopping as a 2-pack for P759 so it’s less than P380. As far as bang for buck goes, this is the best amongst the three. From experience, this also goes nicely after a few days being opened with the bottle having undergone some aeration. Definitely a wine I would recommend!

Our last Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the commercially popular 19 Crimes line. As is typical with other variants of 19 Crimes, this one has strong hints of vanilla and brown sugar on the nose. While it gives off an aroma that is almost like dessert wine, it goes quite nicely upon tasting. It starts off as sweet and typically jammy as far Australian Cabernet Sauvignons go. But it does take a turn, showing characteristics of leather, oak, light spice, and bitterness as you finish. This one drinks very interestingly! At P599, this is the most expensive with today’s selection. However, it is also deservingly the best drinking right out of the bottle. This Cabernet from 19 Crimes is easy to like exhibiting the widest range of flavors.
